"This is How We Do It" explores a day in the life of seven kids from seven different countries around the world. This book follows each kid from the time they wake up until the time they fall asleep. It explores the details of their daily lives and the differences of the day that each kid experiences, but most importantly, it explores the similarities of their days and how we aren’t as different from one another as we might think.
The young reader can make the connection that all these kids are like me in a way. All of them go to school. All of them have a family, a home, and a teacher. All of them also have friends that they play with and chores they have to do to help out around the house.
This unique book provides readers with a window into the lives and traditions of kids from Japan, Peru, Iran, Russia, India, Italy, and Uganda. Some of the traditions explored may serve as an introduction to a young reader, opening their perspective to the world at large and to new and different ways of living. Other experiences may seem all too familiar, allowing the reader to connect with the characters from across the world on a personal level and seeing that they aren’t so different after all.
This book was inspired by Lamothe’s own travels abroad. He is able to bring the world right into your home in this well-written and masterfully illustrated book. Not only does he save you a fortune on travel expenses, but he also has organized and condensed the important parts for your kid in a nice package that is the book.
The book follows a nicely organized pattern set forth by the first page. This makes things really easy for the young reader to be able to connect which picture is associated with which character. It’s a real simple, yet ingenious way to explore the lives of each of the characters.
This wonderfully illustrated children’s book is great for parents and teachers who are looking to expose children to people from across the world, foreign traditions and customs, and to new countries that they have yet to have heard of!
It helps the reader to explore the diversity of the world. To see the differences across cultures and the similarity across humanity.
Lamothe has included, for the reader, a world map just behind the front cover to help orient the reader as to where they are compared to each of the seven kids in the book. It’s a great visual to show the reader just how large Earth is.
The suggested reader ages for this book are for children between the ages of 3 and 7. An excellent book for school-aged kids in kindergarten and first grade. I highly recommend this book if you are wanting to show your kid the world but can’t afford the travel expenses.
