Emma Yarlett is a real shining light in the modern children’s book genre. Her books are fun and engaging in all the right ways.

In Nibbles: The Monster Hunt, we once again follow Nibbles, the book monster, as he eats his way through yet another book.

We join the protagonist, a young male reader, as he chases Nibbles through his favorite fact book. Each page presents the audience with fun facts about a variety of topics including: the sun, the moon, dogs, cats, images through history, and words before Nibbles chews his way into a second book.

This book is a lot of fun. I absolutely love the interactive components! It’s a great way to show that reading can be fun, and that’s the best way to promote a love of reading at a young age.

The front and back covers of the book help to make the story come to life for the young reader. The front cover has a 3D layered effect where the back layer is a flat picture of the protagonist peeking through books to see the book monster, Nibbles. The front layer is part of the glossy part of the front cover, and it is designed to look like books on a shelf with a space between a few of the books for the protagonist to look through.

The back cover has a hole created from the last page of the story. This creative cover design is a fun way to get the young reader engaged right away. Great job, Emma, on this concept!

The story is very simple. Kids should have no trouble following along. The images are top clean and with a soft color palette. They aren't too loud or bright to distract from the chase.

The concepts are gimmicky but in a fun and appropriate way that they don't distract, but rather, lend to the book's charm. This book is recommended for children 5-8 years of age. Any younger and the fun gimmicky components of this book will probably be ripped right out (making it enjoyable to no one).

If you are looking for a fun, interactive book for your children, might I suggest this book or one of the other stories starring this lovable book monster.
