Llama Llama Red Pajama is the original book that kicked off the children’s media powerhouse that is the Llama Llama series
This series contains sixty-seven titles. You heard that right, Sixty. Seven. Titles. These titles range from children’s books, to board books, to concept books. This series even has a two season tv show on Netflix. And let’s not forget about the official Llama Llama plushie!
This series spans almost twenty years, and it all started with Anna Dewdney’s first Llama Llama book that was released in 2005, “Llama Llama Red Pajama.”
Llama Llama Red Pajama, as the title would suggest, is a rhyming book. Specifically, it is a rhyming picture book.
The story begins with a typical scene that most parents that have young children will recognize, a mama reading a story to a child before bed.
Soon Mama Llama finishes the book, kisses Baby Llama Red Pajama goodnight, and departs the room to finish up the dishes that have been left in the kitchen sink.
The room is dark and lonesome without Mama Llama, and soon Baby Llama feels alone. He soon decides he is thirsty, the perfect excuse to call back Mama Llama.
Baby Llama calls out to Mama Llama from the safety of the bed. Mama Llama calls back that she’ll be up soon, but soon isn’t soon enough for Baby Llama. He’s alone now, and no longer wants to be.
He pulls the covers up close and tries his best to be patient. He whimpers softly. He hears the phone ring. He knows Mama Llama got it. He also knows she will take longer to get to him. The waiting is unbearable, and soon Baby Llama ups the drama.
Anna Dewdney hit a grand slam with this book. She immediately gained critical acclaim for both her writing and illustrations with her 2005 release. She quickly amassed a following and the rest, as they say, is history.
This charming rhyming read aloud book makes for the perfect bedtime read, lulling your children to bed with happy thoughts knowing that their parents are always close by when they call for them.
