This is a wonderfully illustrated and written picture book.
The story revolves around Renata and her father as they embark on remodeling their bathroom. However, their progress is soon halted by a couple of wrens who have chosen to build their nest on a shelf just above the tub.
Renata marvels at the nest construction. She observes as papa wren weaves leaves and pine needles to form the floor, builds up three thick sides around it, and constructs the fourth wall with an opening at the front as the door. She also witnesses mama wren flying in to inspect the nest and add final decorations—a scrap of moss, feathers, and a squiggle of ribbon by the door—before tucking herself behind the doorway to await the laying of her eggs.
Before long, the eggs arrive—four rosy little ones with brown blotches. Another week passes until they crack open, revealing four tiny baby birds.
Renata observes the mama and papa wren tenderly caring for their babies. Then, one day, she witnesses the parents whistling to their offspring, encouraging them to leave the nest and attempt to fly.
She witnesses the babies' attempts, only to see them end up in the bathtub below their nest. Feeling sorry for them, she realizes she has the skills to assist. After all, she is the carpenter's helper.
This book serves as a heartwarming reminder of the innocence of children and their compassionate nature to assist those in need, highlighting the joys that accompany acts of kindness.
Rosen skillfully depicts the behavior of the wrens as they search for materials, construct, and adorn their nests.
Camille Garoche masterfully breathes life into Rosen's words with her artistic flair. Her diverse art styles keep each page engaging; from expansive two-page spreads to intimate vignette illustrations, she captivates the reader's imagination.
This book is most suitable for readers aged 3 to 7.
